Abstract:

A total of 2809 anurans representing four species, Cacosternum boettgeri, Kassina senegalensis, Pyxicephalus adspersus and Tomopterna cryptotis, were trapped in a dry Cymbopogon-Themeda veld type during a 15 month study (March 1994 - May 1995) in the Free State, South Africa. Significantly more specimens were collected in tall than in short grass, as well as close to an ephemeral pan compared to pitfall traps farther away. It is hypothesized that most frogs do not accidentally fall into the traps but actually enter them as potential overwintering sites.
