Abstract:

The Afrixalus stuhlmanni complex is defined. Mating calls and morphology of this seemingly closely related group of eastern and southern African frogs are analyzed in a critical attempt to determine V species parameters and evolutionary trends. Six taxa belonging to three species are recognized. Two "benchmark" taxa, Megalixalus stuhlmanni Pfeffer, 1893 and Megalixalus brachycnemis Boulenger, 1896 - long confused with other species in the literature - are identified, and taxonomic amendments are proposed. A key to eastern and southern African dwarf Afrixalus taxa is provided. Hyperoliuspygmaeus Ahl, 1931 is newly synonymized with A. stuhlmanni stuhlmanni (Pfeffer, 1893).
